Department Overview 

Fuel Systems team is responsible for the specification, design, development and integration of all fuel system related components across all car platforms, from concept to production.

 

Job purpose 

To be responsible for the design of Fuel Systems including the coordination of related engineering activities for ICE and PHEV vehicle applications across AML programmes.

 

Key duties and responsibilities 

Design & Development

  • Create and modify 2D drawings and 3D CAD models for fuel system components (e.g., fuel tanks, lines, valves, brackets, heat shields, pumps).
  • Ensure designs comply with customer specifications, internal standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct tolerance stack-ups, DFM/DFA analysis, and feasibility checks.
  • Support prototype builds and review hardware to validate design intent.

Engineering Release & Documentation

  • Prepare and coordinate the release engineering drawings, BOMs, technical documents, and specifications in the PLM system.
  • Manage engineering change requests (ECR) and ensure timely and accurate release of components.
  • Maintain design history, documentation, and revision control.
  • Full responsibility for concern resolution

Project Engineering

  • Coordinate project planning, timing, and milestone activities for fuel system components.
  • Lead communication with suppliers, manufacturing, and quality teams.
  • Track and resolve design issues, test deviations, and development risks.
  • Host DFMEA/PFMEA meetings, define and follow up on actions.
  • Support validation testing, interpret test results, and implement corrective design changes.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with simulation, validation, manufacturing, purchasing, and program management teams.
  • Provide technical support during sourcing, supplier discussions, and design reviews.
  • Lead design reviews, feasibility meetings, and lessons-learned sessions.

 

Experience and qualifications

Essential experience

The essential areas of previous experience required to undertake this role include:

  • Strong proficiency in 3D CAD (Siemens NX) and 2D drafting standards.
  • Experience in automotive fuel systems or related fluid systems preferred.
  • Experience in automotive product development processes (PPAP, DFMEA).
  • Knowledge of materials commonly used in fuel systems (plastics, metals, composites).
  • Knowledge of relevant vehicle legislation and certification requirements
  • Familiarity with manufacturing processes such as casting, machining, stamping, pipe manufacture and assembly.
  • Tracking and planning of engineering, tooling and piece costs

Preferred experience

  • Assembly line and general design for manufacture considerations
  • Engineering process and a working knowledge of industry standard tool sets.
  • Industry standard vehicle validation procedures
  • Developing design standards
  • Teamcenter PLM
  • Developing and documenting benchmark data

Essential education/ qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or related field.

Preferred education/ qualifications

  • Industry related courses – Project Management, Leadership, FMEA

  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities within a fast‑paced environment.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills for cross‑functional and customer interactions.
  • Experience using PLM/PDM systems for releases.
  • Hands‑on engineering curiosity and willingness to support builds or testing activities. Ownership and accountability, team collaboration

 

Additional information 

Ability to travel to engineering partners and suppliers (UK and worldwide) on a regular basis to advance product development is essential.
