Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

Waterlooville | Up to £75,000 DOE | Permanent

Fancy designing parts for some seriously impressive classic cars?

We're looking for a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join a specialist engineering business in Waterlooville.

You'll be working on the restoration, recreation and improvement of classic and historic vehicles.

This isn't about designing the same parts day after day. Every project is different, and you'll get to see your designs go from CAD to manufacture and ultimately onto the vehicle.

What you will be doing

You'll be involved in the full design process, including:

  • Designing new mechanical parts and systems
  • Creating 3D CAD models and engineering drawings
  • Reverse engineering old or unavailable parts
  • Using measurements and 3D scanning to recreate components
  • Designing improvements to make parts stronger, more reliable and easier to manufacture
  • Working on areas such as:
    • Suspension
    • Steering
    • Brakes
    • Drivetrain
    • Engine components
    • Fuel systems
    • Chassis
    • Powertrain installations
  • Working closely with the workshop, fabrication and machining teams
  • Supporting prototypes and testing
  • Producing BOMs, technical documents and engineering reports

The Senior Side

You'll also provide technical support and guidance to other engineers and technicians.

You'll help review designs, improve engineering processes and make sure projects are delivered properly.

You'll also have contact with customers and external suppliers, so being comfortable communicating technical ideas is important.

What We Are Looking For

We're looking for someone who has strong mechanical design experience and can work independently.

You'll ideally have:

  • Mechanical Engineering degree or equivalent experience
  • Strong SolidWorks experience
  • Experience with Inventor, CATIA or Solid Edge would also be considered
  • Mechanical design experience
  • Reverse engineering experience
  • Automotive engineering knowledge
  • Knowledge of manufacturing methods
  • Gear design experience would be a big plus
  • Experience leading or mentoring other engineers
  • PLM experience
  • Experience improving design processes and standards
  • Experience working with design subcontractors
